Watercolor Painting Lessons

Adults or Kids ages 9-17
90-minute lessons
4 weeks, 8 weeks, or 12 weeks

Description:

Students will learn basic concepts for sketching and painting from real life or reference photos. Techniques and tips will be shown at each class. We'll practice a LOT of color mixing, painting techniques, and how to improve our work.

There is a lot of flexibility for each painting class, and we won't all have the same painting! Students will have plenty of flexibility & creativity within the structure of a theme each week. Some themes may be:

  • marine animals
  • tropical flowers & leaves
  • palm trees
  • chickens
  • shells & seeds
  • beach scenes
  • your pet
  • landscapes
  • mountains
  • Hawaiian rainbows

Students may end up with 3-4 paintings each session, depending on their pace. It's ok if they go slower and do fewer projects; they're still learning each week!

We work mainly with high-quality watercolor paints. Other water-soluble paint will be introduced for specific details in our paintings (gouache, acrylic, paint markers for details, watercolor pencils). Most of our projects will be in vibrant, watercolor on a sturdy student paper. Working mainly in watercolor for a while gives young students time to learn about proper brush care and color mixing while minimizing the paint waste that happens with acrylics.

Goals of Watercolor Painting lessons:

  • understand why the paint, paper, and water interact the way they do
  • become more confident in your painting skills so you can make what you see in your head
  • get a solid grasp on color mixing in a way that won't turn your palette yucky
  • understand how to use the elements of art and principles of design to make your paintings feel more satisfying
  • learn to enjoy the painting process and the messy fun!

Students can sign up for as many sessions as they like. They'll always get to create something different!

Supplies:

All supplies are included in the classroom, but students are highly encouraged to practice at home. (See recommended supplies) If you would like to purchase a watercolor palette, please let me know. I custom-assemble palettes with some of the colors that we use in class.
